Carl Maginn and His Legacy
Born on March 4, 1921, Carl Maginn built a remarkable life defined by craftsmanship, innovation, determination, and family. A proud veteran of World War II, Carl returned home at a pivotal moment in American history and began his career as a journeyman carpenter during the post-war housing boom in the San Fernando Valley. From the very beginning, he developed a hands-on understanding of every phase of construction, performing excavation, concrete work, framing, and finish carpentry with exceptional skill and attention to detail.
As his experience and reputation grew, Carl transitioned into the construction of custom single-family residences, earning recognition for the quality and integrity of his work. In 1959, he expanded his vision even further by developing custom tract housing projects, overseeing every aspect of development including entitlements, site development, design, and construction. Carl built more than 300 custom homes across Southern California. Throughout his career, he also completed numerous multi-family projects and constructed several buildings for Glendale Federal Bank.
Carl’s impact on the community was so significant that two streets in Glendale were named in his honor: Maginn Drive and Maginn Place — lasting tributes to his legacy. Also, he served as President of the Building Contractors Association, further reflecting the respect he earned throughout the construction industry.
In the midst of Carl’s booming career, his family experienced devastation. On the morning of March 16, 1964, Carl went to work, Charlotte, his wife, headed out to play golf, and their children went off to school. Earlier that day, a brush fire had ignited in the San Gabriel Mountains, but it initially appeared to pose little threat to the Glendale area. As winds intensified and conditions worsened—much like the devastating Altadena fire decades later—the flames rapidly spread, and the family’s home, which Carl had just completed building a few years prior, burned to the ground. Although their lives were spared, the family lost nearly everything. In the aftermath of the tragedy, Carl and Charlotte devoted themselves to comforting their children and worked tirelessly to rebuild a new life for their family.
Family was always at the center of Carl’s life. He shared more than 50 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Charlotte Maginn, and together they raised two children, Christine and Michael, while later enjoying the love of their grandchildren, Allison and Jeffrey. Inspired by her father’s example and mentorship, Christine pursued real estate development and collaborated on several projects alongside her dad. Carl’s son, Michael, and grandson, Jeffrey, also followed in his footsteps, carrying on the family tradition as general contractors with almost identical interests. Michael and Jeffrey are currently business partners at Maginn Construction Company.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Carl lived an adventurous and accomplished personal life. He was a pioneer in competitive boating and became the first person to exceed 100 miles per hour in quarter-mile drag boat racing. In 1954, he earned the title of National Champion, and in 1959 he became a World Record Holder in boating — achievements that reflected the same fearlessness and drive that defined his business career. He was also an avid motorcycle enthusiast who competed in endurance riding events.
Although Glendale was his home base, Carl enjoyed spending weekends with family and friends at his homes in Palm Desert, where he loved playing tennis, and in Malibu, where he found peace and relaxation at the beach. Carl continued working passionately until his passing in 1995. His final project was a stunning custom hillside home he was building for his daughter, Christine, at the time of his death.
Thirty years after his passing, Carl Maginn’s legacy continues to live on through the homes and communities he built, the family tradition he established, and the countless lives he touched. He is still fondly remembered as a visionary builder, devoted family man, respected leader, and adventurous spirit whose influence remains deeply woven into the fabric of his family, friends, and community.
